Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, is renowned for orchestrating the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. Born around 1480, Magellan's voyage, which began in 1519 under the Spanish flag, dramatically altered the understanding of the world's geography. Despite facing immense challenges, including mutinies, harsh weather, and unfamiliar territories, Magellan's fleet successfully navigated through the strait now bearing his name at the southern tip of South America. Although Magellan himself did not complete the journey, having been killed in the Philippines in 1521, his expedition's return to Spain in 1522 proved that the Earth is round and all oceans are interconnected, fundamentally transforming maritime exploration and paving the way for future global navigation. This groundbreaking achievement not only marked a milestone in human history but also played a crucial role in the Age of Discovery, expanding European exploration and colonization.
