First Anglo-Afghan War

Shelf by nono umasy
The First Anglo-Afghan War, fought between 1839 and 1842, was a pivotal conflict in Afghanistan's history. Triggered by British interests in securing Afghanistan as a buffer state and concerns over Russian influence, this war ultimately proved disastrous for the British Empire. The British East India Company's military intervention and occupation of Kabul led to a costly and humiliating retreat in harsh winter conditions, resulting in the annihilation of the British forces and the death of numerous Afghan civilians and prisoners. This conflict serves as a cautionary tale of the challenges inherent in foreign interventions in Afghanistan and the complexities of the region's geopolitical landscape, echoing through subsequent Afghan conflicts and influencing global politics to this day.
