Azerbaijan's history is rich and complex, characterized by various periods of independence and foreign domination. Situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, it has been part of several empires, including the Persian, Ottoman, and Russian Empires. Ancient inhabitants of the region, known for their advanced metallurgical skills, were succeeded by various Iranian and Turkic dynasties. In the 20th century, Azerbaijan declared independence in 1918 but was soon incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1920. It regained independence in 1991 following the dissolution of the USSR. Since then, Azerbaijan has been known for its significant oil resources and ongoing conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, reflecting its strategic geopolitical position and rich cultural heritage.
