History of Denmark
Shelf by nono umasy
Denmark's history spans over a thousand years, beginning as a unified kingdom in the 10th century CE under King Harald Bluetooth. It became a major European power during the Viking Age (8th-11th centuries CE) when Danish Vikings explored, traded, and raided across Europe. In the late Middle Ages, Denmark entered the Kalmar Union (1397–1523) with Sweden and Norway, forming a powerful Nordic alliance. The 16th-century Protestant Reformation led to significant political and religious changes. Denmark experienced territorial losses after the Napoleonic Wars, notably ceding Norway to Sweden in 1814. During World War II, Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany but regained independence in 1945. In recent times, Denmark has become known for its democratic monarchy, welfare state, and high standard of living.
