The history of Iran, also known as Persia, is a rich tapestry of ancient civilizations, dynasties, and cultural contributions that span over millennia. It begins with the emergence of Elamite and Median kingdoms in the 3rd millennium BCE and eventually culminates in the establishment of the Achaemenid Empire under Cyrus the Great in the 6th century BCE, which became one of the world's first superpowers. Iran saw the spread of Zoroastrianism as its dominant religion and later embraced Islam in the 7th century CE. Throughout its history, Iran has witnessed the rise and fall of various dynasties, including the Safavids, the Qajars, and the Pahlavis. In recent times, the 1979 Iranian Revolution led to the establishment of an Islamic Republic. Today, Iran continues to be a complex and influential player in regional and global affairs, blending its ancient heritage with modern developments.
