History of Latvia
Shelf by nono umasy
Latvia, located on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, has a complex history shaped by foreign rule and its struggle for independence. First inhabited by Baltic tribes, it became part of medieval trade networks under the Hanseatic League. From the 13th century, German, Polish, and Swedish powers controlled the region until Russia annexed it in the 18th century. Latvia declared independence in 1918 but was occupied by the Soviet Union during World War II, followed by Nazi Germany, and then re-annexed by the Soviets in 1944. After decades under Soviet rule, Latvia regained independence in 1991 and joined the European Union and NATO in 2004, solidifying its place in modern Europe.
