The primary objective is to examine Norway as a case that may serve to illuminate some general problems of European state formation in the period, problems related both to the formation of the European system of independent kingdoms within a common cultural framework and to the inner development of these kingdoms. The volume furthermore examines the changes that took place in the military, social-economical, ideological, legal and administrative fields between the first formation of the kingdom and the early fourteenth century which, according to common opinion, represents a peak in the development of a Norwegian state. Excerpt from A History of Norwegian Immigration to the United States: From the Earliest Beginning Down to the Year 1848 Four years ago I contributed an article to The Iowa Journal of History and Politics upon The Scandinavian Factor in the American Population, in which I discussed brieﬂy the causes of emigration from the Northern countries. This article forms the basis of chapters VI-VIII of the present volume, much new evidence from later years having, however, been added. In a subsequent issue of the same J our nal I published an article on The Coming of the Norwegians to Iowa, which is embodied in part in chapters III-V of this volume. The remaining thirty-six chapters are new. During the last three summers I have continued my investigation of that part of the subject which deals with the immigration movement. Norway's history spans from its early settlement by Scandinavian peoples in the late Stone Age to its Viking Age prominence between the 8th and 11th centuries, marked by exploration, trade, and raids across Europe. After unification under King Harald Fairhair in the 9th century, Norway became part of the Kalmar Union with Denmark and Sweden in 1397. Norway remained under Danish rule until 1814, when it briefly gained independence before entering a union with Sweden. Full independence came in 1905. During World War II, Norway was occupied by Nazi Germany. Post-war, Norway became a founding member of NATO and developed into a prosperous, oil-rich welfare state.
