History of Ireland

Shelf by nono umasy
The history of Ireland spans thousands of years, beginning with its earliest inhabitants around 6000 BCE. Celtic culture emerged around 500 BCE, bringing significant social and cultural changes. Ireland's Christianization began in the 5th century CE, with St. Patrick playing a pivotal role. The island experienced Viking invasions starting in the 8th century and was later dominated by the Normans in the 12th century. English rule gradually intensified, leading to centuries of resistance and conflict, including the devastating Great Famine in the 19th century. The early 20th century saw the Irish War of Independence, resulting in the partition of Ireland and the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, eventually becoming the Republic of Ireland in 1949, while Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom.
