A Short History of Ireland

A New History of Ireland is the largest scholarly project in modern Irish history. In 9 volumes, it provides a comprehensive new synthesis of modern scholarship on every aspect of Irish history and prehistory, from the earliest geological and archaeological evidence, through the Middle Ages, down to the present day. Volume I begins by looking at geography and the physical environment. Chapters follow that examine pre-3000, neolithic, bronze-age and iron-age Ireland and Ireland up to 800. Society, laws, church and politics are all analysed separately as are architecture, literature, manuscripts, language, coins and music. The volume is brought up to 1166 with chapters, amongst others, on the Vikings, Ireland and its neighbours, and opposition to the High-Kings. A final chapter moves further on in time, examining Latin learning and literature in Ireland to 1500.

Excerpt from The History of Ireland The struggle for liberty of trade seems to have been this session carried to the other side of the channel, where it was warmly debated in the English house of commons. The state of Ireland had grown so cala mitons and alarming, that it called for immediate attention and relief. There be gan to appear in England a strong feeling of sympathy for the sister island, and the subject was alluded to on several occasions in the English house of commons, until at length, on the second of April, lord Nugent moved that a committee of the whole house should be appointed to consider of the trade of Ireland. He observed, that the conduct of Great Britain towards its sister kingdom had been no less impolitic than unjust, and that the present situation of public affairs called particularly on this country to enter into a revision of the Irish trade laws. The years of Ireland’s union with Great Britain are most often regarded as a period of great turbulence and conflict. And so they were. But there are other stories too, and these need to be integrated in any account of the period. Ireland’s progressive primary education system is examined here alongside the Famine; the growth of a happily middle-class Victorian suburbia is taken into account as well as the appalling Dublin slum statistics. In each case, neither story stands without the other. A History of Ireland, 1800–1922

The elusive search for stability is the subject of Professor D. George Boyce's Nineteenth-Century Ireland, the fifth in the New Gill History of Ireland series. Nineteenth-century Ireland began and ended in armed revolt. The bloody insurrections of 1798 were the proximate reasons for the passing of the Act of Union two years later. The 'long nineteenth century' lasted until 1922, by which the institutions of modern Ireland were in place against a background of the Great War, the Ulster rebellion and the armed uprising of the nationalist Ireland. The hope was that, in an imperial structure, the ethnic, religious and national differences of the inhabitants of Ireland could be reconciled and eliminated. Nationalist Ireland mobilised a mass democratic movement under Daniel O'Connell to secure Catholic Emancipation before seeing its world transformed by the social cataclysm of the Great Irish Potato Famine. At the same time, the Protestant north-east of Ulster was feeling the first benefits of the Industrial Revolution. Although post-Famine Ireland modernised rapidly, only the north-east had a modern economy. The mixture of Protestantism and manufacturing industry integrated into the greater United Kingdom and gave a new twist to the traditional Irish Protestant hostility to Catholic political demands. In the home rule period from the 1880s to 1914, the prospect of partition moved from being almost unthinkable to being almost inevitable. Nineteenth-century Ireland collapsed in the various wars and rebellions of 1912–22. Like many other parts of Europe than and since, it had proved that an imperial superstructure can contain domestic ethnic rivalries, but cannot always eliminate them. The history of Ireland spans thousands of years, beginning with its earliest inhabitants around 6000 BCE. Celtic culture emerged around 500 BCE, bringing significant social and cultural changes. Ireland's Christianization began in the 5th century CE, with St. Patrick playing a pivotal role. The island experienced Viking invasions starting in the 8th century and was later dominated by the Normans in the 12th century. English rule gradually intensified, leading to centuries of resistance and conflict, including the devastating Great Famine in the 19th century. The early 20th century saw the Irish War of Independence, resulting in the partition of Ireland and the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, eventually becoming the Republic of Ireland in 1949, while Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom.
