The Umayyad Caliphate, which ruled from 661 to 750 CE, marked a significant era in Islamic history. Established after the death of Prophet Muhammad, this early Islamic dynasty played a pivotal role in the expansion of Islam, extending its influence across North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Spain. Under the Umayyad rule, the Islamic civilization flourished, characterized by advancements in architecture, governance, and culture. The Umayyad Caliphate's legacy includes the construction of iconic monuments like the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and the spread of Arabic as a unifying language for the Muslim world. However, its rule was not without controversy, as it faced internal opposition and ultimately gave way to the Abbasid Caliphate. Understanding the Umayyad Caliphate is essential for comprehending the early development of Islam and the broader context of the Islamic Golden Age.
