The War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748) was a major European conflict sparked by the death of Emperor Charles VI and the contested succession of his daughter, Maria Theresa, despite the Pragmatic Sanction securing her inheritance. Prussia, under Frederick II, seized Silesia, prompting Austria, Britain, and allies to resist Prussian and French expansion. The war spread across Europe, North America, and India, involving multiple theaters. It ended with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748), which restored most territories but allowed Prussia to retain Silesia, setting the stage for future conflicts, including the Seven Years' War.
