The War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) was a major European conflict triggered by the death of the childless Charles II of Spain, leading to a struggle over who would inherit the Spanish throne. France, under Louis XIV, supported his grandson Philip V, while a coalition of European powers, including Austria, Britain, and the Dutch Republic, opposed this to prevent a French-Spanish union. The war saw battles across Europe and the Americas, ending with the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) and the Treaty of Rastatt (1714), which recognized Philip V as king but barred the unification of France and Spain, reshaping the balance of power in Europe.
